One Man's Experience
Life at the Seminary …

It’s probably not what you’d imagine. We’re a house of college-age men, going to school, studying, living together — it’s a pretty normal life. We’re mostly from Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk; some of us with roots in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and other countries.

What makes life at the Cathedral Seminary different from most people’s college experience is that we’re also discerning a call to ministry in the Church. To facilitate that discernment, we spend time in prayer, spiritual direction, and personal development. We study philosophy. And we devote some significant time to working with the poor and homeless, or teaching in the Religious Education programs of local parishes.

A typical day for us starts with morning Mass at 7:00 a.m. After breakfast, we’re off to school, usually at St. John’s University. We gather for prayer again before dinner. Three nights a week we have something scheduled: speech class, group meetings, or a Rector’s conference. Night prayer is usually at 10:00 p.m. It’s a pretty full schedule, but it still leaves enough open space for exercise at the ICC fitness center, movies, hobbies, and the personal time needed for reflection, relaxation, and time with friends.

While we’re here at the Cathedral Seminary, this is our home. It’s not a monastery, but it’s not a fraternity house either. Not everyone here will go on to a graduate seminary program, and not all will be ordained. But the experience of living here, and exploring who God is calling us to be, leaves each of us better prepared for whatever path God has for us.
