Feeling at Home

Angela DiPaolo
Apostolic Oblates

In my twenties I had a boyfriend and a good family life. I taught religion and participated in parish activities, but was still searching. I started going to daily Mass and asked a friend why it made me feel at peace. She answered, "Maybe the Lord wants more from you. Just keep going to Mass."

One day she invited me to visit the house of formation of the Secular Institute of the Apostolic Oblates. Though resistant at first, I eventually accompanied her and later learned she was an External Member of the Institute. It soon became clear that the Lord was calling me. Though I visited other institutes, I often went back to the Oblates because THERE I FELT AT HOME.

After much prayer and discussion with my spiritual director, I left my boyfriend and my family. They did not make it easy, but I had decided to join the Apostolic Oblates. Since I made that decision, the charism, spirituality, formation, dedication, and communion with other members of the Institute have given my life direction and stability. As a consecrated laywoman, I feel I can be an inspiration to others seeking their place with the Church.
