The Mystery of Contemplation
Sr. Susan Marie Kasprzak V.H.M. Formation Directress, Visitation Monastery(center in photo)
The mystery of my contemplative vocation began with isolated moments
of
insight which flowed into more sustained musings about religious life.
These
initial contemplative moments inserted themselves into an ordinary life.
I
was a Hunter College graduate who had made the communications industry my
career, in particular the television research division of NBC, where I
was
Research Director. The diversity of my responsibilities was
counterbalanced
by a deepening spiritual interest, and I became more active in my parish,
Resurrection Ascension, in Rego Park, where I served as Eucharistic
Minister,
at the homeless shelter, and as a member of the Prayer Group.
It was the lay Prayer Group that became the true catalyst for my
vocation, as the idea of prayer as my way of serving God became clearer
to
me. I discovered the monastic, contemplative life of the Visitation
Monastery
in Brooklyn by making several weekend retreats there, and after
discernment
with a spiritual director, entered the community in September 1988.
My life as a contemplative, monastic nun centers around Jesus, and is
focused on prayer in community. We gather for the Liturgy of the Hours
five
times a day, in which we chant God's praises through the psalms.
Amid our daily work and recreation there is also time for private
meditation.
Over the years I have been privileged to serve my community in a
variety
of assignments: manual work, teaching religion, and helping in the
Infirmary.
More recently I have been guiding candidates and new members in our way
of
life as Formation Directress.
I am profoundly grateful to Our Lord for calling me to live with Him
in
Visitation Monastery.
