What
is the Society of St. Peter the Apostle? What efforts does it support? When was
it started?
In 1889 two women in
Caen, France responded to the deeds of the Bishop of Nagasaki, Japan, as he
pleaded for funds to maintain the diocesan seminary. Stephanie Bigard and her
daughter Jeanne gathered a small group of missionary-minded faithful to found
the Society of St. Peter.
Besides helping in the
formation of local clergy, the Society of St. Peter Apostle also provides
scholarships to priests doing postgraduate studies and even runs pension funds
for retired diocesan priests in many parts of the world. Assistance is also
given to men and women preparing for religious life. Beyond helping in the
initial stages of their formation, the Society provides limited help with some
postgraduate studies.
Our 2000
summer appeal was a great success.
Over $166,035.00 was donated towards the efforts of St. Peter's Society.
