Rev. John F. Brogan Director
Welcome to the world of mission
and missions
world-wide!
Anyone familiar with Christianity knows that Jesus Christ, upon
completing his mission on earth, commissioned his disciples to go and preach the
Gospel to all nations, to the ends of the earth. Christian churches, while
established to sustain their members in faith, have as their foundation and
reason for being that missionary command of their Founder. Pope John Paul II
said it another way when he reminded all Catholics that the Church is either
missionary or it is not the Church at all.
From the great missionary travels of St. Paul, so successful that some
erroneously consider him to be the founder of Christianity, every generation of
Christians has sent missionaries out to "other lands" with the hope of bringing
the "good news" of Christ to everyone. In different centuries that mission has
taken on distinct features characteristic of those times. When that immersion of
the Gospel into a particular moment in history was healthy and Christ-oriented,
there was success and the Christian community grew happily. When that immersion
was too closely identified with not only secular pursuits, but with less than
humane goals, then the Gospel suffered indifference or rejection.
The missionary challenge remains ever new and ever great! Thank you for
your interest today in knowing about how the Pontifical Mission Societies are
collaborating with many missionary efforts world-wide and right here in the
United States, while at the same time attempting to animate and inform all
Catholics of their missionary identity and role in this moment of
history!
Whether you are Christian or not, whether you are a believer in God or
not, you are most welcome to this missionary site. The entire staff of the
mission office here in Brooklyn welcomes you and hopes that you find what you
are looking for here. If not, please contact us.
Again, thank you for your visit!
