Dialogue and Faith
As the world grows smaller through our modern technology we are
discovering that dialogue is a way of life. It is through conversation
that we learn about each other. It is through the sharing of words that ideas
are exchanged. It is in the personal encounter that we discover our shared
humanity. Through this discovery fear of difference can be mitigated. When
conversations conquer fear then the stranger can become the friend. All
people of Good Will seek peace through understanding.
Religious dialogue can be an opportunity for Roman Catholics to
imitate the mind and attitude of Christ Jesus. We can do this by striving to
"Love one another." Jesus
proclaimed the coming of the Kingdom of God. This Kingdom is characterized
by peace and reconciliation. To love means to will the good for the other
regardless of race, color, or creed. Love does not discriminate. Love rejoices
in the truth. Love is always kind. Love respects the other.
Ecumenical and Inter-Faith dialogue can happen if all the
participants mutually respect each other. Witnessing the faith and the religious tradition of
others
uplifts us. It encourages us to be faithful to our respective religious
tradition. Dialogue does not seek to convert the other. Dialogue encourages each
participant to be faithful to his/her respective faith tradition. It is only by
being true to ourselves that we can be effective dialogical partners.
Religious dialogue is enhanced through deep faith in God and a love
for people. This love is manifested by: seeking
to learn about the other, appreciating our respective histories, and
having mutual respect, kindness, truthfulness, faithfulness, hospitality, and
humor. When we share our humanity, divinity is present. It is God who led
us.
