Catholic-Jewish
Dialogue
The Catholic-Jewish Dialogue is
our longest standing Interreligious conversation in Brooklyn. Its current
chairperson is Msgr. Guy Massie. The goals of this dialogue areto
grow in mutual understanding and respect,
to mitigate anti-Semitism and to grow in appreciation through ongoing
conversation.
This dialogue seeks
to study and learn from our differences, as well as our similarities. This
dialogue strives to live out the Vatican Document "Nostra Aetate."
The Diocese of Brooklyn has been in dialogue with the
Anti-Defamation League of B'nai Brith and the American Jewish Committee. The Dialogue
in the person of Msgr. Massie has cooperated in educational programs at the
Holocaust Museum in Manhattan. Presently the Diocese of Brooklyn participates in the
C-JEEP program (Catholic-Jewish Educational Enrichment Program), sponsored by
the American Jewish Committee. This program is directed to high school
students. A Catholic educator teaches a class in a Jewish high school
while a rabbi teaches in a Catholic high school.
Education of the clergy is essential. To sensitize priests, deacons
and catechists to Jewish concerns regarding Catholic education, the Ecumenical
and Inter-Faith Commission of the Diocese has addressed problematic Christian
scripture texts in a yearly letter sent to all priests and preachers during the
Lenten Season. The major source for this letter is the National Conference
of Catholic Bishops' publication titled "God's Mercy Endures Forever."
For more information on this particular dialogue please contact
Msgr. Guy Massie at (718) 680-1010 or via e-mail at
ecumenicalcommission@dioceseofbrooklyn.org.
