About the Ecumenical Commission
One of the first things a visitor to our Diocese notices is the rich diversity
of ethnic and cultural backgrounds among our local faithful. We work and pray
in a pluralistic culture. We stand shoulder to shoulder with Sikhs and Jews on
the subway; share meetings with Hindus and Lutherans; our children learn and play
with Muslim and Orthodox children.
Founded in 1965 by Msgr. Vincent Genova, the commission has extended its reach from a
single Jewish-Catholic community of dialogue to being host and nurturer of four active
communities partnering in dialogue. These communities are comprised of Catholics,
other Christians, and representatives from other faith groups.
While maintaining the unique primacy
of the Roman Catholic faith, we nurture relationships with other Christians and
faith traditions so that we can pray with and support each other in our mutual
work of sharing God's love with all people in every way possible. Welcome to the
conversation.
