The Diocese offers a 3.5 year program for
diaconate formation in both English and Spanish. About half of those in
formation speak Spanish.
Classes are two nights a week and one Saturday
a month. Many wives take classes with their husbands. While in formation,
candidates for the diaconate also remain heavily involved in their own parish as
a necessary training and preparation for their lifelong ministry.
Part of the formation process involves working
with a parochial mentor who will help guide the candidate and his wife in their
understanding and appreciation for the sacrifices and joys of this particular
calling.
After completing 534 hours of classes and
securing the approval of the Bishop, the candidate is ordained a deacon and is
entrusted with the Gospel for a life of ministry in the Church.
