Queens South Services

More than one hundred years ago, the parish was a place where people went for help - if they needed extra food or a job, if they were having trouble with a child. Today, Catholic Charities continues that tradition in Queens with programs such as the Queens South Health  Care Coalition organized by five Catholic parishes and a Lutheran church. The coalition's success has led to broadening community connections and alliances. These parishes aren't waiting for people to come to them; they're reaching out.

Also in Queens South, Catholic Charities has programs for English as a Second Language, summer activities for school children, adolescent peer leadership, food and nutrition, housing for people with special needs, employment assistance, and so much more.

Thousands of people participate in a Catholic Charities program every day in Queens South, helping each other and gaining confidence and independence.

Feature Story

When TWA Flight 800 crashed off of Long Island, Catholic Charities was called upon to provide services to families of those lost. Six counselors from the Rockaway Mental Health Clinic and Flatlands Guidance Center responded to the call to Kennedy Airport after the crash, helping family members and neighbors through this ordeal.

But, every day, counselors at these centers and others in Jamaica, Far Rockaway, and Queens Village, are helping neighbors in South Queens deal with emotional and psychological stresses.

Comprehensive out-patient services are available for families and groups, including help for persons with serious and persistent mental illness. Our approach is tailored to the individual, but services include case management, vocational support, crisis intervention, self-help, and connection with volunteer services.

The Sunset Psycho Social Club in Far Rockaway, for instance, is open evenings and weekends to offset the member's natural tendency to isolate himself or herself and risk re-hospitalization.

For those who are homeless and have a mental health diagnosis, Monica House offers support services and housing. We work to help residents become part of the community according to their individual capacity. Our goal is to reduce the need for hospitalization and prevent a return to homelessness.

From an isolated crisis to ongoing challenges, Catholic Charities programs in South Queens reach out to help people to get back on track and to maintain or regain their independence. Because every day should bring new life.
