Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always, until the end of the world!
- Matthew 28:20

Preparing catechists to teach religion is a significant role in parish life. The Director of Religious Education plans and directs the process that readies catechists for their ministry. The way in which DREs reveal the person of Christ to the catechists has a profound impact on how these ministers carry out their task to invite others to go deeper in faith.

Our office uses the Gospel of Luke 24 as a four-step guide for the catechetical process. In this Gospel, as the disciples make their way to Emmaus, they first tell their story about their disappointment in what happened to Jesus. Next (the second stage), they are enlightened as a stranger (Jesus) comes by and gets to tell his side of the story (scripture). Third, they recognize Jesus and invite him into their lives in the breaking of the bread. Finally, they embrace their mission as they run back to tell others they have seen the Lord.

Our Directors of Religious Education help people embrace their mission to be disciples of Jesus. They ensure that the Word -- and reflection and action on the Word-- is present in schools, parish centers, and homes.

Catechesis not only brings to maturity the faith of those being catechized but also brings the community itself to maturity.
