| The parish,
established by the Vincentian Fathers, was originally named St. Mary
Queen of the Isle, but was soon changed to St. John the Baptist in
honor of Bishop Loughlin. This building was the first chapel. Soon
the facilities expanded to include St. John's College (present day
St. John's University), St. John's Prep, St. John's grammar school.
From 1891-1930 St. John the Baptist Seminary was also here. The prep
school closed in 1971, the college moved to Queens, but the parochial
school does a great job for inner city children and is one of the
great success stories for Catholic education in the Diocese of Brooklyn. |
