Vicar for Senior Priests

About 160 priests who have served the Diocese of Brooklyn for many years are now retired or of retirement age. This office assists them and those who care for them with all their needs, whether they actually retire or continue to serve the Diocese in some capacity. In view of our priest shortage all of our priests are encouraged to remain active and are offered incentives to do so.

The mission of our office is that all senior priests will be treated with respect, kindness and dignity for all their health care and personal needs. This office is your home base. Never hesitate to call.

What is a senior priest?

As a priest in the Diocese of Brooklyn approaches age 71, he can request retirement in writing from the Bishop. His options are:
  • to reside as pastor emeritus in his own parish
  • to reside in another parish with the agreement of the pastor
  • to retire in his own personal residence
  • to request to live at the Bishop Mugavero Residence
  • to retire from pastorship and continue as an active priest, known as a parochial vicar
  • to continue as pastor until age 75
  • not retire as a parochial vicar and continue active as long as he desires
Serving those who have served

Our office provides a multitude of services, including maintaining a senior priest profile, forms regarding medical needs, health care proxy, and funeral arrangements. We also have updated addresses of senior priests, handle all financial questions about the St. John Vianney Fund pension, and provide elder care law advice, information on all nursing homes, consultation on all health care questions, updates on senior priests who are in hospitals, lists of pastor s who have retired priests in residence, and information about how to receive health care at home. For those nearing retirement age, we help in the preparation and planning for the elder years.
