NOTES $7 MILLION SUBSIDY FOR PARISH SCHOOLS

COLLECTION TO AID HURRICANE VICTIMS
(September 20, 2004)

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has asked pastors of parishes in Brooklyn and Queens to consider taking special Sunday collections to support relief efforts among victims of the hurricanes that have hit the Caribbean and parts of the southeastern section of the country.

            In a Sept. 15 letter, the Bishop said he would send the funds to Catholic Relief Services for aid in the Caribbean and to Catholic Charities USA for assistance in the South.

            The series of hurricanes "have caused massive destruction and have placed people in harm's way," the Bishop wrote. "With sadness we note the large number of deaths and the toll that these tragedies have taken on the families left behind."

            Bishop DiMarzio said "the needs created by these turbulent storms" would motivate parishioners, who "have always responded generously to appeals to assist people in distress."

RESULTS REPORTED

            Parishioners of the churches in the Diocese made substantial contributions to national collections taken in the first six months of 2004. The collection dates and the results reported by parishes through Aug. 31 follow:

            Jan. 25, Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe and the Church in Latin America, $151,819.87; Feb. 29, Black and Indian Missions, $167,330.87; March 21, American Bishops? Overseas Appeal, $172,799.61; April 9 (Good Friday), Holy Land, $194,104.18; April 25, Catholic Home Missions Appeal, $159,809.39; May 16, Catholic Communication Campaign, $122,815.23; June 27, Peter?s Pence, $152,883.75.

FOR MADRID BOMBING VICTIMS

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Diocese of Brooklyn will offer a memorial Mass in Spanish for the victims of the terrorist attacks in Madrid at St. Joseph?s Church, 43-19 30 th Ave., Astoria, Wednesday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m.

Msgr. Perfecto B. Vasquez, a native of Spain who is pastor of Guardian Angel Church in Brooklyn, will preach the homily.

Two cultural groups comprised primarily of Queens residents born in Spain---Casa Galicia and Circolo Espanol---will attend the Mass. Juan Manuel Egea Ibanez, the Consul General of Spain in New York, also will be present, according to Deacon Jorge A. Gonzalez, director of the Hispanic Ministry Office of the Brooklyn Diocese. 

More than 190 persons died and more than 1,600 were injured in the March 11 bombings of commuter trains.



HISPANIC YOUTH TO DEMONSTRATE FAITH
IN HOLY SATURDAY PROCESSION IN QUEENS

Several hundred Hispanic Catholic youths from Queens and Brooklyn will express their religious faith in a Holy Saturday procession, April 10, called a Caminata, along seven miles of Queens streets, beginning in Elmhurst and finishing in Long Island City.

Members of the Jornada Movement, a youth group, they will wend their way through eight parishes, carrying banners and statues and praying in front of each parish church.

The procession will begin at 8:30 a.m. at St. Bartholomew?s Church, 43 rd Ave. and Ithaca St., Elmhurst, and continue to the following churches: St. Leo?s, 49th Ave. and 104 th St., Corona; Our Lady of Sorrows, 37 th Ave. and 104 th St., Corona; St. Gabriel?s, 26 th Ave. and 98 th St., East Elmhurst; St. Joan of Arc, 35 th Ave. and 82 nd St., Jackson Heights; Corpus Christi, 31stAve. and 61st St., Woodside; St. Joseph?s, 30 th Ave. and 43rd St., Astoria, and St. Patrick?s, 40 th Ave. and 29 th St., Long Island City.

 The Centro de Evangelizacion San Vicente de Paul, 118 Congress St., Brooklyn, is coordinating the Caminata.


TEACHERS' CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS
