The Office for Clergy Personnel has the important task of staffing the parishes and offices in the
Diocese with priests and deacons. Our office also develops and maintains a policy and procedures manual
to aid clergy in their positions.

The greatest challenge facing our office is one
that affects the whole Church in Brooklyn: over the past 5 years, the number of active
diocesan priests has dropped 23 percent. Today 263 diocesan priests are in parish assignments, compared
to 340
in 2001.

The office endeavors to make the truth known about this decline so that the Diocese can continue
the difficult process of planning accordingly. Creative restructuring on every level is necessary so
that the Church can fulfill its mission of living and preaching the Gospel.
