BISHOP DAILY'S WELCOME TO BISHOP DIMARZIO Aug. 1, 2003
The
people of God in the Diocese of Brooklyn join me in expressing our deep
gratitude to our beloved Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, for appointing Bishop
Nicholas A. DiMarzio as the seventh Diocesan Bishop of Brooklyn.
As
everyone knows, Brooklyn is a unique diocese. We are truly blessed with a
vibrant community composed of persons who come from so many varied cultural and
national backgrounds.
In
my 13 years as Bishop of Brooklyn, I have seen the gift of faith alive among all
our people. Despite the difficult challenges which we have all
encountered, and still encounter, there have been tremendous signs of hope and
growth.
I
have been touched by the way in which the message of Jesus has become flesh,
first of all in the generosity and dedication with which my brother bishops and
priests face what is a demanding and yet enriching ministry, in the way our many
devoted religious Sisters and Brothers and Permanent Deacons continue to be a
sign of God’s call to holiness through service in a wide variety of ministries,
and in the exemplary lives of our laity, who take so seriously their role in the
mission of the Church. In his administrative responsibilities in the
Archdiocese of Newark, his very effective ministry in Catholic Charities, in
Migration affairs at the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, and as
Bishop of the Diocese of Camden, Bishop DiMarzio has manifested great leadership
and effective ministry. Truly he has brought Christ’s message and presence
to all as a friend of the poor and disadvantaged. Indeed he has manifested
great leadership as a good shepherd wherever he has served.
The
Diocese of Brooklyn indeed will be blest in Bishop DiMarzio’s role as it
Bishop. From my personal experience, I know that he will be supported in
this challenging work by the deep love and cooperative spirit of those with whom
he will share his ministry.
I
offer him my complete cooperation and service in any way he deems suitable for
the good of all in Brooklyn and Queens.
May
he have many and blessed years as Shepherd of the Diocese of Brooklyn.
Bishop DiMarzio, “Ad Multos Annos!”
