TO OBSERVE TEN YEARS OF CATHOLIC-JEWISH TIES
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Diocese of Brooklyn will host a reception Dec. 1 for Jewish and Catholic leaders to mark the tenth anniversary of Vatican-Israeli relations, to be held at the Immaculate Conception Center, 7200 Douglaston Pkwy., Douglaston, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Apostolic Nuncio to the United Nations, and Rabbi Dr. Gerald Meister of the Office of the Consul General of Israelin New York, will speak at the event, sponsored by the Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the Diocese and the Israeli Consulate General.
Msgr. Guy Massie, director of the diocesan office, will introduce the speakers, who will also include Bishop DiMarzio and Omir Ofek of the Consul General's Office for brief remarks.
The speakers will reflect on the establishment of full diplomatic ties between the Vatican and Israel on June 15, 1994 after almost two years of negotiations by a joint commission representing the Holy See and the Israeli government. The agreement by the two states contained general principles of religious freedom in civil society and included a strong condemnation of anti-Semitism and called for an exchange of ambassadors.
