BILOXI SAYS THANKS FOR KATRINA AID
The Diocese of Biloxi has described the Catholics of Brooklyn and Queens as “magnificent, Christ-like people” for contributing funds to assist in rebuilding church structures as Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts there continue.
Local parishioners responded to a collection taken by U.S. dioceses in August for rebuilding work in the Biloxi Diocese and the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio had encouraged parishes to cooperate in the collection.
In a letter, Msgr. Andrew Murray, Biloxi’s Vicar General, said a number of churches remain unusable, adding that “we know that years of work lie before us” to replace them and five parochial schools also destroyed.
“We will rebuild,” he said, “because of our determination. . .and the wonderful help of people throughout our nation and the world who are reaching out to us.”
“Thank you for being one of these magnificent, Christ-like people,” Msgr. Murray wrote.
According to a formula established by the U.S. bishops, forty percent of the funds raised in August went to the Biloxi Diocese and sixty percent to the New Orleans Archdiocese.
As announced last month by Msgr. John J. Bracken, Vicar General for Temporalities, the Diocese contributed $56,727 to Biloxi and $85,091 to New Orleans.
