FOREIGN-BORN SEMINARIANS

TO TAKE MAJOR STEP

Three seminarians from diverse backgrounds will move a step closer to priestly ordination for the Diocese of Brooklyn when they are Admitted to Candidacy in a ceremony during an All Saints Day Mass to be celebrated in the chapel of the Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston, Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 9:15 a.m.

Vincentius Do, Raphael Munday Kukana and Bony Monastere, all students at the Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, L.I., will advance to the next stage of their preparation for ordination before a congregation that will include the student bodies of Cathedral Prep, Elmhurst; Cathedral Residence of the Immaculate Conception at Douglaston and the Immaculate Conception Seminary.

Auxiliary Bishop Octavio Cisneros, rector of the Cathedral Residence, said the Mass will draw the three seminary communities together "for the first time in a long time." He will be the principal celebrant and homilist. Mr. Do, 31, is Vietnamese, Mr. Kukana, also 31, was born in the Congo and Mr. Monastere, 40, is a native of Haiti.

Born in Saigon, Mr. Do came to the U.S. as a 16-year-old. A member of the Congregation of St. John the Baptist before seeking entrance to the Diocese of Brooklyn as a seminarian, he is fluent in English, Chinese and Vietnamese.

Mr. Kukana, born in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart before deciding he wished to serve in the diocesan priesthood. He speaks French and English and also is proficient in sign language.

A graduate of St. John's University, Mr. Monastere speaks English and French/Creole.

The three men will be among eight seminarians who will be ordained as transitional deacons on Dec. 8.
