300 TO HEAR TALKS

ON PRIESTLY HOLINESS

Reflections on how a priest can enrich his response to the “universal call” for holiness in his life will highlight a convocation for some 300 priests of the Diocese of Brooklyn to be held next week at a conference center in Thornwood, N.Y.

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio and five speakers will address the priests, who will attend in two groups Oct. 17-21, 160 from Monday to Wednesday afternoon and 140 from Wednesday afternoon to Friday.

Father Anthony J. Ciorra will give the keynote talk, “The Universal Call to Holiness in the Life of the Priest,” on Wednesday, when the two groups will overlap. He is the dean of the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education at Fordham University.

Bishop DiMarzio will speak at an afternoon session that will precede Father Ciorra’s talk.

The other speakers will be Msgr. Howard W. Calkins, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Mount Vernon, on “Holiness and the Fraternal Life”; Msgr. Charles R. Fink, spiritual director of the Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, on “Holiness and Parochial Life”; Father Boniface Ramsey of St. Christopher’s Church, Staten Island, on “The Holiness of the Priest in the Fathers of the Church,” and Msgr. John J. Strynkowski, rector of St. James Cathedral-Basilica, Brooklyn, on “Priesthood in the Writings of John Paul II.”

Organizer of the program was the diocesan Office of Ministry and Life of Priests, directed by Msgr. Thomas G. Caserta. He headed an eight-member planning committee for the event, which he said will be “a valuable time of spiritual growth and mutual support.”

The convocation is patterned after a similar event conducted three years ago for 300 priests on the theme, “Healing the Heart of the Priesthood.” They assembled at the same site, the Alpha Omega Family Center of the Legionaries of Christ.
