BISHOP TO GIVE FIRST RETREAT ON LIVE TV
For the first time, the Diocese of Brooklyn will present a live retreat on cable television, with Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio delivering reflections on the Eucharist, as the Church’s Special Year of the Eucharist draws to a close.
The retreat will air on the Prayer Channel the evenings of Tuesday to Friday, Oct. 11-14, at 8 p.m., from St. James Cathedral Basilica in Brooklyn. The Prayer Channel is Channel 79 on Time Warner Cable and Channel 30 on Cablevision.
Calling it a “unique retreat experience,” Bishop DiMarzio expressed the hope that it would “unite all the faithful of our Diocese together in prayer, even those who cannot travel out of their homes because of age or illness.”
Pope John Paul II proclaimed a Special Year of the Eucharist last year. It will conclude during the three-week world Synod of Bishops on the Eucharist in Rome that begins Oct. 2.
The Diocese of Brooklyn will mark the closing of the year at a celebration at KeySpan Park in Coney Island Saturday, Oct. 15. The theme is “One Bread, One Body, One Family in Christ.”
Bishop DiMarzio said he will give his talks on the four retreat nights leading up to the Oct. 15 closing event “in the context of Eucharistic adoration and prayer.”
The Bishop will deliver three ten-minute reflections each evening, within a one-hour prayer service, which will include readings from Scripture, hymns and Exposition and Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament.
A eucharistic theme will guide each evening’s service. They are: Oct. 11, “Faith in the Eucharist: The Eucharist as the Center of Our Lives and the Church”; Oct. 12, “Celebrating the Eucharist of the Lord”; Oct. 13, “The Relationship between the Eucharist and Penance”; Oct. 14, “The Eucharist Gives Us a Mission.”
The Oct. 13 penance theme will relate to that day’s diocesan-wide Day of Penance and Fasting. Bishop DiMarzio has invited pastors and administrators to conduct a communal prayer service that day, with the opportunity for Confession, especially for parishioners who will attend the Oct. 15 event at KeySpan Park, where Confession will not be available.
Msgr. Francis J. Caggiano, Vicar for Evangelization and Pastoral Life, said a small congregation, comprised of members of parishes and ecclesial movements, will attend the services at St. James Cathedral Basilica.
After each service, the Prayer Channel will present a panel discussion on the spiritual implications of the Bishop’s talks.
Bishop DiMarzio said he was urging parishioners to “make every effort” to participate in the televised retreat, describing it as a “special opportunity for prayer, reflection and grace for our whole diocesan family.”
