QUEENS PROCESSION

HONORS ST. PADRE PIO

 

            The Italian Apostolate of the Diocese of Brooklyn will sponsor a procession and Mass in honor of St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina in Queens Sunday afternoon, Oct. 2.

 

            A statue and relic of the Italian Capuchin Franciscan saint will be carried in a procession that will leave at 4 p.m. from St. Mel’s Church, 28-20 154th St., Flushing, and arrive at St. Luke’s Church, 16-34 Clintonville St., Whitestone, for Mass at 5 p.m.

 

            Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will be the principal celebrant and preacher for the Mass.

 

            St. Padre Pio, the stigmatic priest who died in l968 at age 81, was canonized by Pope John Paul II June 16, 2002. His feast date is Sept. 23.

 

            Father Steven J. Aguggia, coordinator of the Italian Apostolate, said a retreat in Italian entitled “The Compassion of Christ” will be given by Passionist Father Dominic Papa at the Bishop Molloy Retreat House, 86-45 Edgerton Blvd., Jamaica Estates, Friday evening, Oct. 21, until Saturday evening, Oct. 22.
