POPE NAMES CAMDEN BISHOP TO DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN

          Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignation of Bishop Thomas V. Daily of Brooklyn, and named Bishop Nicholas A. DiMarzio of Camden to succeed him.

          Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, papal nunico to the United States, announced the resignation and appointment Aug. 1 in Washington.

          Bishop Daily, who has headed the Diocese since 1990, submitted his letter of resignation to the Holy Father on his 75th birthday, as required by canon law, ten months ago---Sept. 23 of last year.

          A native of Belmont, Mass., Bishop Daily was named bishop of Brooklyn Feb. 20, 1990, and was installed April 18. Prior to that he was the founding bishop of the Diocese of Palm Beach, appointed July 17, 1984.

          Bishop DiMarzio, 59, a native of Newark, N.J., was appointed an auxiliary bishop of Newark Oct. 31, 1996.  He was named bishop of Camden June 8, 1999, and was installed July 22.

          He will become the seventh bishop of the Brooklyn Diocese, which is celebrating its 150the anniversary.  It was founded July 29, 1853.

          The date and location of Bishop DiMarzio's installation in Brooklyn have not been determined.
