LOCAL PARISHIONERS AID

CARIBBEAN FLOODING VICTIMS

The Diocese of Brooklyn has sent $144,345.14 to Catholic Relief Services for emergency aid it delivered to thousands of people affected by violent flooding in Haiti and the Dominican Republic in May.

At the request of Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, parishioners of 217 churches in Brooklyn and Queens contributed the funds through collections taken at Sunday Masses held in June.

Catholic Relief Services, the U.S. Catholic bishops’ international relief and development agency, responded immediately to a call to help survivors of the flooding, providing more than 50 metric tons of food, potable water, medicines and materials for shelter.

At least 3,000 Haitians and Dominicans died as the result of landslides and other devastation caused by several days of heavy rains.
