DIOCESE REIMBURSED

                                     FOR CANCELLED EVENT

The Insurance and Finance Departments of the Diocese of Brooklyn looked for a silver lining in case bad weather would cause the Diocese to cancel its observance of the closing of the Year of the Eucharist Oct. 15---and found it in the form of a check for $86,556.48.

And it was more than a cloud that appeared in the blue over Coney Island’s KeySpan Park, intended site of the event, that forced the decision to cancel the daylong program, but eight days of pelting rain that delivered 13 inches of precipitation from the skies.

Since inclement conditions are always a fear when planning an outdoor event, the Diocese arranged for insurance protection to guard against “extreme weather,” a condition that became an understatement. In fact, eight inches fell on the Thursday and Friday alone before the planned Saturday program.

The check from the Commerce and Industry Insurance Company, received early this month, reimbursed the Diocese “in full for all the expenses incurred,” said Bishop-elect Frank J. Caggiano, who chaired the planning committee. “The Diocese did not lose any money.”

He credited the Finance and Insurance Departments for their roles in pursuing the reimbursement.
