BAY RIDGE CHURCH SITE OF BISHOPS’ ORDINATION
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has announced that Our Lady of Angels Church in Bay Ridge has been selected as the site of the Episcopal Ordination Ceremony for Auxiliary Bishops-elect Guy A. Sansaricq, Octavio Cisneros and Frank J. Caggiano.
When the appointment of the new bishops was made public June 6, Bishop DiMarzio said the ceremony would be held Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m., but the location had not yet been determined. After a site review of several churches in the Diocese conducted by a committee named by the Bishop, the Bay Ridge church was chosen.
At the solemn liturgical ceremony in which the new bishops will be elevated to the hierarchy of the Church, Bishop DiMarzio will be the Consecrating Bishop. The principal Co-Consecrating Bishops will be Retired Bishop Thomas V. Daily and Auxiliary Bishop Ignatius A. Catanello.
Reflecting the U.S., Cuban and Haitian national origins of Bishops-elect Caggiano, Cisneros and Sansaricq respectively, the Mass will be celebrated in English, Spanish and Creole.
A congregation of more than 1,200 is expected for the Mass, which will be televised live by the Prayer Channel. A lengthy procession into the church of Bishops, clergy, Religious, ecumenical and interreligious guests and Knights and Ladies of Honor will begin at 1:15 p.m.
It is anticipated that civic officials will attend the Mass.
Our Lady of Angels Church, located on Fourth Ave., between 73rd and 74th Sts., was dedicated in l929. It was the parish’s second church building, the first one having been constructed in 1893, two years after the parish was established.
The Tablet announced this week that it will publish a special commemorative issue on Aug. 19, containing articles and photos highlighting the lives of the new bishops.
