FRS. LoPINTO, FRAWLEY

GIVEN ADDED DUTIES

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Diocese of Brooklyn announced June 14 the appointment of Father Alfred P. LoPinto as Vicar for Human Services and Father Patrick J. Frawley as consultant on Catholic health care for the Diocese and liaison to St. Vincent Catholic Medical Centers, effective June 20. Each will serve a three-year term.

Father LoPinto, who will remain as pastor of St. Therese of Lisieux parish in East Flatbush, will succeed Auxiliary Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan, a national leader in health and social services, whose resignation as Auxiliary Bishop was accepted by Pope Benedict XVI on May 12, after reaching 75 years of age.

In his association with St. Vincent Catholic Medical Centers, Father Frawley will succeed Msgr. Austin P. Bennett on the board of trustees and its executive committee. Father Frawley will continue as executive vice-president and chief operating officer of Fidelis Care New York, the statewide non-profit Catholic health plan, at its office in Rego Park.

For Father LoPinto, the new responsibility he will undertake will draw on 16 years of social service experience gained prior to his appointment as pastor of St. Therese of Lisieux in l999.

Two of his assignments took him away from the Diocese. The first was to Washington as executive director of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops from l985 to 1990.

When he completed his service in Washington, he became executive director of Catholic Charities for the Diocese of San Bernardino, remaining in California for seven years. While there he was a consultant to the California Catholic Conference on social policy issues and served as president of the state’s association of Catholic Charities directors.

Father LoPinto, who holds a master’s degree from the Columbia University School of Social Work, was assigned to Brooklyn Catholic Charities from l981 to l985, serving in community affairs and social action. During that time he was a founder of the Roundtable, a national association of Catholic social action directors.

Father Frawley brings to his new responsibilities a decade of experience in health care. In l995/96 he was assistant executive director of Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica, before assuming positions in Fidelis Care of New York.

While officially retired as Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn, Bishop Sullivan will continue to serve the Diocese in a variety of ministries.
