BISHOP WILL ORDAIN TWO FOR PRIESTHOOD MAY 31
Bishop Thomas V. Daily will ordain two men to serve as priests of the Diocese of Brooklyn at a Mass in St. James Cathedral Basilica, Jay St. and Cathedral Pl., Brooklyn, Saturday, May 31, at 10 a.m.
The new priests are Father Kevin P. Abels and Father Josephjude C. Gannon, both natives of Queens. They recently completed their studies for the priesthood at the Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, L.I.
Father Abels, 27, was born in Middle Village and attended Our Lady of Hope School there, Cathedral Prep, Elmhurst; Cathedral Residence of the Immaculate Conception, Douglaston; St. John’s University, Jamaica, and the Immaculate Conception Seminary. His parents are Lawrence and Linda Abels.
Born in Far Rockaway, Father Gannon, 26, studied at St. Joseph’s School, Hewlett, L.I.; St. Mary Star of the Sea School, Far Rockaway; Msgr. McClancy High School, Jackson Heights; St. Francis College, Brooklyn, and the Immaculate Conception Seminary. He is the son of Paul and Patricia Gannon.
During their seminary training, Father Abels and Father Gannon spent a year serving in a parish. Father Abels was at St. Dominic’s, Bensonhurst, and Father Gannon was at Our Lady of the Snows, North Floral Park.
Father Abels will celebrate his first Mass in Our Lady of Hope Church Sunday, June 1, at 2:30 p.m. Father William R. Dulaney will preach the homily and concelebrate the Mass. The other concelebrants will be Msgrs. Nicholas W. Sivillo and Francis J. Caggiano and Fathers Arthur A. Candreva and Gaetano J. Sbordone. A reception will follow in the parish hall.
Father Gannon’s first Mass will be offered in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Far Rockaway Sunday, June 1, at 1:30 p.m. Very Rev. Sean G. Ogle will deliver the homily and concelebrate the Mass. Also concelebrating will be Msgr. Raymond F. Chappetto and Fathers James K. Cunningham, Fulgencio Gutierrez and Gary Sommermeyer. After the Mass, a reception will be held in the parish hall.
