I rejoice in the election of Pope Benedict XVI as Supreme Pontiff and Vicar of Christ. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, the College of Cardinals has chosen a deeply spiritual man to succeed our much beloved late Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. Our new Holy Father’s holiness is an enormous gift to the Church and to a world in need of constant reminders of the grace that comes from a profound spiritual life.
As Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict was a close collaborator with his predecessor, Pope John Paul, and understood the depth and breadth of his theological and philosophical teaching. As our new pontiff, he will continue to guide the Church with the same wisdom.
I pray that our Eternal Father will bless this humble and learned man as he faces the many challenges he will encounter, especially in the pursuit of peace and justice throughout the world.
I ask all of the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn to join me in expressing gratitude for the gift of a new Holy Father and in praying that people of good will will embrace him in his ministry as Vicar of Christ.
