BISHOP ASKS THE FAITHFUL
TO REMEMBER HOLY LAND

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has asked the people of the Diocese of Brooklyn to support the annual Good Friday collection, which assists the Holy Places and the Church’s works of mercy in the Holy Land.

Stating that this is a cause “so close to the heart” of Pope John Paul II, the Bishop said the Holy Father has urged “intense prayers for peace” for all who dwell in the Holy Land, where people live “in stressful conditions.”

In a letter to pastors and administrators of the 216 parishes in Brooklyn and Queens, the Bishop noted a statement made last year by Pope John Paul: “May the Christians so tried by never-ending violence and many other problems that cause financial impoverishment, social conflict and human and cultural debasement, never lack the support of the entire Catholic Church.”

Popes since the 13th century have given Franciscan Friars special responsibilities in the Holy Land. They minister by protecting the Holy Places and serving the people they find there, said Bishop DiMarzio.

In the 2004 Good Friday collection, parishioners in Brooklyn and Queens contributed $193,361.
