          DEACON TO SERVE ON USCCB COUNCIL

 

Deacon Guillermo D. Gomez of St. Gerard Majella parish, Hollis, has been named to the National Advisory Council of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington on the recommendation of Bishop Thomas V. Daily.

 

            The 63-member council meets twice a year to review materials and make recommendations on matters facing the bishops at their spring and fall general meetings. The members are mainly lay persons, but the council also includes several clergy, Religious and bishops.

 

            Deacon Gomez’s first meeting with the council will be in Baltimore March 14-16 in preparation for the bishops’ June meeting in St. Louis. Chosen as an at-large member, he will serve a four-year term.

 

            A native of Colombia, he was ordained a deacon by Auxiliary Bishop Rene A. Valero Oct. 9, 1981. He is the coordinator of the annual diocesan celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Chiquinquira, patroness of Colombia, and directs ministry to his parish’s Hispanic community.

 

            Deacon Gomez is employed by Banco Espanol de Credito in Manhattan as an information systems manager.
