TSUNAMI FUNDS

PASS $500,000

Responding to the post-Christmas tsunami devastation in South Asia and Eastern Africa, parishioners of churches in Brooklyn and Queens have donated more than a half-million dollars for disaster relief, according to a report issued by the Diocese of Brooklyn this week.

In collections taken at Masses the weekend of Jan. 8-9, parishes received $380,177.50 in contributions. This was in addition to $134,816.61 that parishioners gave the prior weekend, running the total to $514,994.11.

After the Jan. 1-2 collection, the Diocese sent the full amount to Catholic Relief Services, the U.S. bishops’ agency for overseas aid and development, which has mounted a major relief effort in the ravaged area.

Of the funds collected last weekend, CRS received an additional $302,928.38. The remainder was designated for two other Church-related international aid agencies: the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, $51,499.41, and the Catholic Medical Mission Board, $25,749.71.

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, who asked the pastors and administrators of parishes to seek financial assistance from their congregations for the victims of the calamity in the Indian Ocean, will celebrate a Memorial Mass at St. James Cathedral Basilica in Brooklyn on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 5 p.m.

Members of the diocese’s Indonesian and Indian Apostolates will attend the Mass.
