PARISHES COLLECT $135,000 FOR TSUNAMI SURVIVORS
On the first weekend after the devastating Dec. 26 Indian Ocean tsunamis, members of parishes in Brooklyn and Queens donated $134,816.61 for disaster relief. The Diocese of Brooklyn sent a check in that amount Jan. 7 to Catholic Relief Services, which is aiding survivors.
The total contributed by parishioners was to increase this week as some parishes were taking a second collection at the Masses on the weekend of Jan. 8-9 or collecting for the first time. The additional amount raised was still being tabulated.
The 216 parishes of the Diocese were responding to an appeal made by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio right after the calamitous event.
Catholic Relief Services, the U.S. bishops’ agency for overseas aid and development, committed $25 million in assistance when the tsunamis swept into 12 countries in Asia and Africa.
