COLLECTION TO ASSIST

THREE REGIONS OF WORLD

            A collection to assist the Churches in Need---in Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe and Africa---will be taken at the Masses Jan. 20-21 in the 216 parishes of Brooklyn and Queens.

            Through offices of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the funds will benefit pastoral projects in the three areas of the world, including evangelization programs, seminary training and catechetical programs.

            The bishops’ Secretariat for the Church in Latin America has supported apostolic work in that region for 40 years and the office assisting the Church in Central and Eastern Europe has functioned for more than 15 years. The efforts on behalf of the Church in Africa began a year ago.

            Last year, parishioners contributed $189,894 to the collection.
