Pope Benedict Honors Priests of Diocese
Pope Benedict XVI has elevated seven priests of the Diocese of Brooklyn to the rank of Chaplain of His Holiness with the title of Reverend Monsignor, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has announced. They were recognized for outstanding service to the Church.
The news monsignors are Msgrs. Joseph P. Calise, principal of Cathedral Prep Seminary, Elmhurst; Alfred P. LoPinto, Vicar for Human Services; John W. Maloney and Sean G. Ogle, Territorial Vicars; Robert J. Romano, pastor of St. Bernadette’s, Dyker Heights, and chaplain for the New York City Police Department; Gregory C. Wielunski, Judicial Vicar and pastor of Nativity, Ozone Park; and Peter W. Zendzian, pastor of Holy Cross, Maspeth, and coordinator of he Polish Apostolate.
Bishop DiMarzio also announced that three priests who held the title of Chaplain of His Holiness have been raised to the rank of Prelate of Honor by the Holy Father. They are Msgrs. Peter V. Kain, pastor of St. Ephrem’s, Dyker Heights; Joseph P. Nagle, pastor of St. Patrick’s, Fort Hamilton, and Joseph A. Nugent, pastor of Our Lady of the Presentation, Bedford Stuyvesant.
As announced in February, Msgr. Otto L. Garcia, pastor of St. Joan of Arc, Jackson Heights, and former Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia, was named a Protonotary Apostolic.
Bishop DiMarzio will present the honors on behalf of Pope Benedict at a prayer service in St. James Cathedral Basilica, Brooklyn, Sunday, May 20, at 7 p.m.
