Name Brooklyn Priest U.S. Bishops' Liturgist

Msgr. Anthony F. Sherman, a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn, has been appointed executive secretary of the Secretariat for Divine Worship of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington. He began his three-year term on Nov. 15.

The secretariat’s associate director since 2002, he succeeds Msgr. James Moroney, a priest of the Diocese of Worcester, who had directed the office for 11 years.

Msgr. David J. Malloy, the USCCB’s general secretary, announced the appointment. He cited Msgr. Sherman’s “exceptional knowledge and skill in the field of liturgy” and thanked Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio for his “generosity in agreeing to make him available for this service.”

Msgr. Sherman, who has written extensively on liturgical issues, headed the Brooklyn diocesan Liturgical Commission for more than a decade and served as pastor of St. Matthias parish in Ridgewood for 11 years before going to Washington five years ago.
